Preface
This review was written during the couple of days I spent testing Phil's personal unit, which was sent to me for evaluation. All thoughts and opinions are of course, my own.
Overview
Sound
These are some bassy cans. Much bassier than you would expect for an open back, I had always considered Meze's headphones to be best if you wanted bass in open backs, but these blow any Meze I've tried out of the water. The bass and low mids are rich and thick, vocals shine through despite this, and the treble is sparkly (a bit sharp to me).
What’s in the box
Philphone 300Ω
Single-ended 3.5mm cable
6.3mm screw-on adaptor
Philphone Phil stickers
Rubber band (for comfort adjustments)
I can't exactly say what all comes in the box with these because it depends on what you order, you can order a balanced cable with them, which requires further modifications to the headphone itself, you can throw in some tuning pads, you can get no rubber band to increase clamp if not needed. It's all a largely buyer-maker invested product so what you get with them depends on what you want with it! I love boutique and custom products like this so I appreciate the whole customization process.
Design and build
These are made using the chassis of an Audio-Technica headphone (one of the angled-driver ones) with lots of modifications done to it. They are very light and comfortable when worn, but the lightness can feel a little bit cheap if you're used to bulkier metal headphones. But that isn't to say it's built cheaply, because it's not, it feels very premium, no squeaking and not much rattling going on with the moving parts and very high quality feeling and looking paint.
